| When Mr. Cope was a young artist, having studied for two or three years at the chief cities of Italy, the second picture he ever exhibited at the British Institution in 1836 was called "Mother and Child", and it quickly sold at the 'private view' day. "The success of the little work has always made the subject a favourite with Mr. Cope, and he produced ...many compositions of a similar kind, - of which that engraved here is one - taking, as a rule, members of his own family as models. The monogram of the artist on the canvas, with the date, 1848, shows the picture to have been painted that year.." (Art Journal 1877) | |||||
