The painting "The Offer of the Crown to lady Jane Grey" was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1827. "On the death of Edward VI, in 1553, the Duke of Northumberland, who had
long been intriguing to make Lady Jane Grey the successor to the throne, went
down to Sion House, near Brentford, where she was then resident, accompanied by
her father, the Duke of Suffolk, the Earl of Pembroke, and others of the
nobility, to offer her the crown. ...Lady Jane was at length prevailed on,
or rather compelled by the exhortations of her father, the intercessions of her
mother, the artful persuasions of Northumberland, and, above all the earnest
desires of her husband, -Lord Guilford Dudley - whom she loved tenderly, to
comply with what was proposed to her.... Jane and her husband, both standing,
occupy the centre of the composition, and on the opposite side of the table is
seated her mother, the Duchess of Suffolk; ...the scroll held by one of the
nobles may be assumed to be the royal document, or letters-patent, issued by
Edward shortly before his death, whereby he set aside the succession of his
sisters Mary and Elizabeth." (Art Journal 1877) |
